Bristol app kicks off the reuse revolution

Refill makes it easy to say goodbye to single-use

Created and trialled in Bristol, the Refill app allows you to pinpoint restaurants, bars, cafes and local businesses that will happily refill your reusable bottle for free so you’ll always have access to a supply of fresh drinking water. How refreshing. Now, the organisation behind the Refill campaign, City to Sea, has announced plans to extend the app to include refill options such as food and household goods.

Lucky for us, Bristol and Oxford will be the first locations to trial additional services. You could soon be firing up the app to find a local coffee shop that will fill your reusable cup, or a restaurant that will serve you up a tasty takeaway in your own container. The app will also list shops that specialise in self-serve products, so you’ll be able to top up on household supplies like washing up liquid and toothpaste as well as groceries.

Local businesses like Better Foods, Chilli Daddy, Zero Green and The Greenbank pub have all signed up for the three-month trial, with the hopes that more will sign up and kick-start a refill revolution across the UK.

Of course, you’ll still be able to top up on H2O as you go. In fact, over 250,000 people have used the app to quench their thirst at over 30,000 refill stations across the UK so far. (Hopefully, not all at the same time, that would be some queue.) It’s estimated that the Refill app will have saved over 100 million single-use bottles from entering our waste stream by the end of 2019.

Rebecca Burgess, CEO of City to Sea said, “We’re thrilled to have so many businesses signed up in Bristol, our home city and where the Refill campaign started life. We want to make it even easier for people to say goodbye to single-use with the Refill app, allowing them to search for places where they can take a reusable container for hot drinks, lunch and household goods. It’s brilliant that Bristol is a leading light in this pilot and I know the community will come together to show the rest of the UK what’s possible.”
