We seafood at The Fish Shop, Bath

Bath finally has a fishmonger, and it’s come in the form The Fish Shop. It’s the first food store of its kind in Bath for nearly a decade . Having built up a reputation for superior seafood and great service in the Bristol branch, we reckon that Bath fish fans will be hooked
Just as you’d find at the shop’s sister branch in Bristol, the slab (that’s fish counter to us civvies) is packed with an array of fresh south coast seafood and fish. The longstanding relationships that The Fish Shop has with suppliers means that the fishmongers often know exactly where the stock was landed and even the name of the boat. (We hope it's something fun like 'seas the day').
We took the short walk from central Bath to the new premises over in Oldfield Park where the fresh seafood is proving a hit with the locals; the fish cakes and sea bass fillets are especially popular, owner Dan Stern tells us . If you are really looking to impress at your next dinner party, Dan would recommend a starter of three scallops per person, and gave us some great advice on cooking them to perfection.
“Gently fry some shallots in a pan with butter and or olive oil. Then add and fry the scallops for five minutes until they show some colour on both sides. Take the scallops out of the pan and add more butter and a dash of white wine and reduce down. Pour the result over the scallops on the plate. Serve with salad leaves drizzled in olive oil and balsamic. Mop-up the juices with toasted sourdough. Yum!”
The most underrated fish? Try hake, says Dan, “It's a lovely meaty white fish and it's gill net caught rather than trawled, so it's more sustainable.”
The Fish Shop Bath can be found at 2 Third Ave, Bath BA2 3NY.
