Preview: Dartmouth Food Festival

Enjoy a taste of the sea, expert talks and much, much more at this weekend's Dartmouth Food Festival

As you all know, we’re big fans of food festivals here at Crumbs HQ, so we're excited about heading to the coast this weekend for the annual Dartmouth Food Festival, which runs from 20-22 October.

The festival takes over the town from the South Embankment, through the heart of the Royal Avenue Gardens, to the old market, and the festival celebrates the kind of art we all love the taste of. There are stalls aplenty, something to suit everyone’s tastes, from Bad Boy Chilli Mash, Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka, Café Alf Resco, Taco Shack, Miso Tree to name just a few.

As well as filling our bellies with yummy festival fodder, we’ll be hoping to catch up with incredible chefs such as Mitch Tonks, Angela Harnett, Michael Wignall, Romy Gill and Matt Tebutt, who will be on hand to rustle up tasty dishes during live cooking demonstrations and generally chat about all things delish.

There will also be an exciting programme of talks, panel discussions and Q&As, aptly named Eat Your Words. BBC Radio 4 The Food Programme ’s producer Dan Saladino returns to host three of these sessions, starting with a lively discussion around England’s seafood coast with Mitch Tonks and Barry Young from Brixham fish market (Saturday, 10-11am). There’s also an interview with Allan Jenkins, award-winning editor of Observer Food Monthly , who talks about his Devon river childhood and how he believes gardening saved his life (Saturday, 1.45-2.45pm).

Children can come along for free to Fussy Eaters and Table Tantrums (Saturday, 12.30–1.30pm) so bring the whole family to this informative session with Henry Dimbleby, Jenny Chandler and Olia Hercules. Topics include the benefits of baby-led weaning, finding out how to get little ones cooking more and inspiring teenagers to become young food heroes, plus practical tips to avoid making food a battleground.

All sessions take place in the Flavel Church, opposite the Royal Avenue Gardens on the Saturday. While on Sunday, there will be a Kitchen Confidential session in the Chefs’ Demo tent, Royal Avenue Gardens, starting at 10.30am when the festival welcomes Mitch Tonks, Matt Tebbutt, Angela Hartnett, Mark Hix and Romy Gill. Get ready to fire away with your behind-the-scenes questions and culinary queries.

Dartmouth Food Festival is free to attend and Eat Your Words Saturday session tickets cost £5 each (under 16s, free). There are also Eat Your Words day tickets available at the reduced rate of £20 for all six sessions (Sunday session not included). Sunday Kitchen Confidential tickets (£10) include a glass of fizz and a breakfast snack. Tickets are selling like hot cakes, so book yours now!
